À la carte

We took a short break—with the end of summer and all. Your ALC is slightly meatier today, or, more meatless, depending on your perspective…

When Chicken Fingers and Fries Won’t Do— Seems more kids are opting to go meatless these days because they’re not ok with “murder for meals.” Yes, that sounds harsh but… accurate. When one of the kids in the household decides to go meatless it can up-end things like the dinner menu and cause friction with carnivorous siblings. Here’s some sound advice on how to make it work. Skipping the Salisbury Steak— Those of a certain age will remember frozen TV dinners, they never quite turned out the way they looked on the package, and oddly, they all tasted pretty much the same, sorta like the food at your neighborhood’s legacy diner. Turns out sales of frozen dinners are finally on the rise after years of stagnation. Companies have embraced real (pronounceable) ingredients, modernized packaging, put a focus on flavor, and walked away from touting “diet” or “low calorie” to focus on “healthy.” And it’s working. Crazy Cookies— Last April 1st I tried my first mint toothpaste flavored Oreo thanks to a mischievous 10yr old. A few weeks ago Oreo rolled out two new flavors, and they have nothing to do with April Fools pranks. Hot chicken wing and wasabi Oreos rolled out in China. If you’re dying to try them, the article says you can probably find them on eBay. The World Needs More José Andrés— He’s helped feed victims of California wildfires and published We Fed an Island, a book chronicling his efforts in Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria. Where is he now? In North Carolina, exactly where you’d expect him to be, helping to feed Hurricane Florence evacuees. If You’ve Been Paying Attention— McDonald’s is changing. They’re using fresh beef patties for quarter pounders, cutting artificial preservatives in their chicken nuggets, removing corn syrup from the burger buns and cutting calories in the happy meal. The latest change comes to their apple pie. Finally— Not everyone loves pumpkin spice.
